Various outlets have more or less confirmed that Bae Doona locked a role in Cloud Atlas, to be directed by the Wachowskis (Matrix, V for Vendetta) and Tom Twyker (Run Lola Run, The Princess and the Warrior). Her casting in the film adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel would be her biggest role to date, acting alongside Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Hugo Weaving.
While the principal cast will be undertaking numerous characters in several interwoven stories, Bae is up for a single role—a clone named Sonmi~451. Wikipedia describes the character as:
a genetically-engineered fabricant (clone) server at Papa Song’s diner (a stand-in for McDonald’s), is interviewed before her execution after she rebels against the capitalist totalitarian society that created and exploited her kind. The next character watches Sonmi’s story projected holographically in an ‘orison’, a futuristic recording device.
I’ve always been perplexed that Bae Doona has more critical credit and recognition in foreign film circles than in her own country. Perhaps it’s because she doesn’t fit the Korean beauty standard, but inclusion in a legitimate Hollywood production could finally bestow her a well-deserved esteem among the South Korean audience.
Bonus: Bae posing for the July issue of High Cut.
