The last time an Asian actress appeared in a Bond film was Michelle Yeoh in Tomorrow Never Dies. Now, various outlets are reporting that an an Asian actress is being sought again to play a sexy, mysterious, and villainous role in James Bond 23 (rumored to be called Skyfall).
Though producers are combing through hundreds of candidates, Tang Wei, Fan Bingbing, Li Bingbing, Josie Ho, and Shu Qi have been weeded out as the top contenders. Yellowcranestower.blogspot.com assesses the five actresses’ chances, saying:
Fan Bingbing and Li Bingbing are well known domestically in China but Fan’s English is not strong and Li’s is not as strong as Tang Wei and Josie Ho. Shu Qi has sexy but in The Transporter she did not have much dialogue. Tang Wei is considered the likely choice due to both her English fluency and notoriety from Lust, Caution. Josie Ho has the rebel image and fashion style, also, she recently worked on Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion.
Of the five, Tang Wei may have the best chance of landing the coveted role not just because of the aforementioned, but also because her management company, An Le Movie Company, is among the key investors for this Bond installment. For me, any of these girls would be fine, though I must say Fan Bingbing has the best overall look for it. I also like the edginess-à-la-Chrissie-Hynde that Josie Ho exudes; it’s easy to imagine her squaring off with James Bond.
The lucky actress will be acting alongside Javier Bardem, Judy Dench, Ralph Fiennes, official Bond Girl Berenice Marlohe, and of course, Daniel Craig. Final decisions will be announced soon, as shooting for the film begins in November.
