It seems like everyone wants a piece of the Do Min Joon & Cheon Song Yi action but unlike the Indonesian version, this comes without controversy.
It’s not news that American television has run out of ideas so there’s no surprise that they are back to their old tricks viewing foreign television and adapting it for their audience. Well, I don’t know if I should call it “old” or just “usual” because they’ve been doing it for decades. It’s even more interesting when they adapt the show then export it to the country they copied it from.
In the past, I heard of American networks buying rights for shows like My Lovely Sam Soon but nothing came of it. However, lately, it seems like they are getting serious with recent acquisitions of shows like Grandpas Over Flowers, Reply, Good Doctor and now My Love From The Star.
Here’s the synopsis for the American adaptation of My Love From The Star according to The Hollywood Reporter:
ABC’s take is described as epic supernatural love story about a world-famous pop star, Lark, and her anti-social neighbor, James, who happens to be from another planet. Disillusioned by the pettiness of human nature, and a resident of Earth for the past several hundred years, James has a centuries-old rule that he will never use his abilities to intervene in the lives of the people around him. But when he gets a premonition that the infuriatingly self-centered but compelling Lark is going to be murdered, James finds himself drawn into her chaotic life and falling deeply in love — just as he finally has the chance to return to his home in the stars.
This version will be produced in collaboration with the original creator and producers. This drama is right up The CW’s alley but they are probably too broke to bid high enough for it. ABC’s been doing well with Once Upon A Time which combines romance with fantasy so it makes sense for them to be interested in this.
Given the tendency to have as many seasons as possible – assuming this show goes all the way – I wonder how long they will drag James’ will-he-will-he-not dilemma about returning home. Will it even be introduced in the first season? If you think about it, My Love From The Star is somewhat similar to Lois & Clark where Clark saved Lois in almost every episode so maybe it will work although I’m not sure if American audiences particularly love the damsel-in-distress act.
As of now, it appears that ABC has handed out a script commitment so it will be a while before we know if they even shoot a pilot.
