As a big fan of the original HBO series (I’ve seen the movie and all seasons but skipped Season 4 because I couldn’t deal with the Medellin storyline), I can’t say I’ve been looking forward to this. Particularly because I don’t know if I can trust tvN to capture all the debauchery of the original. I mean, Vince dated a porn star for chrissakes so can we really get something comparable in a Korean drama?
Plus there’s no major romance for the main character (although he does get married at some point) and I think the long-standing romance actually features his best friend. Will there be a major romance? Or will it be primarily bromantic?
Here’s the synopsis from AsianWiki:
Young-Bin (Seo Kang-Joon) is a rising star actor in South Korea. He has been best friends with Ho-Jin (Park Jung-Min), Joon (Lee Kwang-Soo) and Geobook (Lee Dong-Hwi) since they were all children. Young-Bin belongs to a management company with Kim Eun-Gab (Cho Jin-Woong) as the CEO.
Casting is quite spot-on. The lead is the pretty-boy straight man. He gets into his fair share of drama but he’s sort of the normal guy surrounded by very colorful characters and I think they’ve done a good job capturing that here.
Here’s the character intro:
Seo Kang Joon plays Cha Young Bin, the star.
Jo Jin Woong plays Kim Eun Gap, the CEO of his company.
Park Young Bin is his manager and childhood best friend, Lee Ho Jin. He’s the responsible one.
Lee Dong Hwi plays Turtle, his driver who also does odd jobs for him.
Lee Kwang Soo plays his brother, Cha Joon. The original star of the family who’s now a has-been and walking punchline.
They are really expecting this to do very well as it will be aired in several countries across Asia with different delays ranging from simultaneous (China) to 1 week (Japan). I wish them success.
