Gong Yoo is back! I personally haven’t watched him in a drama since 2007’s Coffee Prince so it’s been close to a decade for me. I’m not a big fan of his but that “Man or Alien” scene is one of my most memorable in Kdramaland thus he will always have a place in my heart.
I try not to get caught up in overly hyped dramas so I can tell you that till today, all I’ve known about Goblin is that it’s a Kim Eun Sook (Secret Garden, Descendants of the Sun) drama starring Gong Yoo.
What is it about? From AsianWiki:
Dokkaebi (Gong Yoo) needs a human bride to end his immortal life. Meanwhile, the Angel of Death has amnesia. Somehow these two meet and live together. They see off those who have passed away and are now leaving this world.
Lee Dong Wook (whom I will always for love My Girl) plays Wang Yeo, the Angel of Death while Kim Go Eun (Cheese in the Trap) will be the human bride, Ji Eun Tak. Yoo In Na will play Kim Sun, a chicken restaurant owner in a love line with Wang Yeo while Yook Sung Jae rounds out the main cast as chaebol heir, Yoo Duk Hwa. Congrats to our cutie pie maknae for bagging this role.
Here’s the English-subbed video (click on “cc”):
While I often find Kim Eun Sook’s works lacking, when you think of her most successful dramas like Descendants of the Sun and Secret Garden, she often gives us bromances and separate romances. In other words, we get to enjoy a bromance that isn’t bogged down by a cliché love triangle. It appears to be the same in this one. Yay!
Another thing I’m grateful for based on the preview is that our heroine has agency. For whatever reason, she knows he’s not human and wants to be with him. So there will be no deception on his part.
I guess this preview was a success because it converted a “probably not watching” to a “will check it out.”
Goblin premieres on tvN on December 2nd.
