One thing I’ve learned in my years of watching dramas is that I can’t hack anything over 20 episodes. I might have been able to watch a 24-episode drama in the past (although I can’t think of one now) but every time I try a long drama, I give up halfway through because there always seems to still be a daunting task ahead of me.
But what’s this drama even about? He steals people or what the heck does the title mean?
Here’s the synopsis from Viki:
What would you do if the mere fact of your birth gives you no standing in society?
Hong Gil Dong (Yoon Kyun Sang) is the illegitimate son of nobleman Kim Amogae (Kim Sang Joong) and his concubine, which gives Gil Dong no legal standing in Joseon society. With no opportunities to do any legitimate work despite his brilliance, Hong Gil becomes the leader of a band of smugglers who steals from the rich to give to the poor.
Hong Gil’s contemporary, Lee Yoong (Kim Ji Suk), becomes the tyrannical King Yeonsangun who oppresses the lives of the common people. Hong Gil saves the life of Song Ga Ryung (Chae Soo Bin), who becomes a young widow after her husband is killed by the king. Ga Ryung dreams of getting revenge against the king at all costs. The king’s faithful consort is Jang Nok Soo (Honey Lee), who secretly can’t forget her first love, Hong Gil. Can Hong Gil champion the rights of the common people on his path to becoming Joseon’s first revolutionary activist? “Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People” is a 2017 South Korean drama series directed by Kim Jin Man.
So he doesn’t steal the people but he steals for the people. What a difference a single word can make.
Hmm. Sounds like there will be several love triangles. Or I suppose a love square. You have the King who probably loves his consort Jang Nok Soo who isn’t over her first love Hong Gil Dong who will probably fall for the widow, Song Ga Ryung (who is still in love with her dead husband?) .
Here’s the long preview:
Some English-Subbed Teasers:
If this drama wasn’t 30 episodes long, I would give it a shot because I like both Honey Lee and Kim Ji Suk. I liked Yoon Gyun Sang in Pinocchio but he hasn’t impressed me in the dramas he’s been since then. Perhaps this will be a turning point for him?
Anyway, Rebel: The Thief Who Stole (for) the People premieres on January 30th on MBC.
