School 2017 premiered and I like it so far. I don’t really have much to say because not much has happened yet but I’m enjoying how light and fun it is.
I thought the first episode was a bit too much and forced. We had that annoying, unnecessarily long cameo by CNBLUE’s Kang Min Hyuk. Like why? And then these unrealistic situations like the kids lining up for food according to their grades. Then we had the cliché characters like the rich, bad boy, the studious, good boy with a dark side and our cheerful lead female with bad grades.
With that said, I found the second episode much better. Unlike School 2015 which featured a dark mystery involving twins, amnesia, mistaken identity etc etc this one is about revealing who the school prankster is. So yeah, nothing particularly serious so far. Things could get darker if the prankster becomes dangerous.
I’m enjoying the dynamics between all the characters, especially Eun Ho and her two potential love interests. I like that she’s not shy and timid around either of them and there’s no cliché long standing crush from her end. There’s also no male character who treats her like crap while secretly harboring feelings for her. Don’t get me wrong, the “bad boy” Tae Woon could very well have a thing for her but although sarcastic and occasionally brash, he’s actually nice to her.
Anyway, so far, so good. One thing I liked about Reply 1994‘s Na Jung was that she was book smart and I would have liked for our lead female to be the same, but we don’t always get what we want. At least, she’s passionate about becoming an artist which only enhances the character.
