What happens when screenwriting hit-maker Kim Eun Sook and director Lee Eung Bok collaborate? Ratings gold, if their previous offerings Descendants of the Sun and Goblin are anything to go by.
This time around, they team up with bona fide movie star Lee Byung Hun in his first drama in almost a decade. Also starring Kim Tae Ri, Yoo Yeon Seok and Byun Yo Han, Mr. Sunshine is a historical drama about a Korean man who returns to his homeland as an American soldier and falls in love with an aristocrat’s daughter.
Here’s the teaser:
The obviously spared no expense as the cinematography looks good.
While both characters are adults, the female lead is 20 years younger than her male counterpart. I often find a power imbalance in Kim Eun Sook’s dramas and hope this one will be different and the female character isn’t infantilized, is strong and independent (perhaps being an aristocrat’s daughter will help) and has agency. Descendants of the Sun avoided her usual trope so I cross my fingers for this one too.
Mr. Sunshine is a pre-produced drama and will debut in July 2018 on tvN.
