Seo In Guk’s return to Dramaland is the upcoming tvN series The Smile Has Left Your Eyes which is a remake of 2002 Japanese hit drama One Million Stars Falling from the Sky.
I may not talk about it much these days but there was a time I was a Kimura Takuya fangirl so of course, I’ve seen the aforementioned drama.
Watching One Million Stars Falling from the Sky was a very interesting experience for me because there was something being foreshadowed… something that continued to fill me up with dread that I kept hoping wouldn’t be true. But it was too interesting to stop watching and as I wasn’t the spoiler whore I am today, didn’t look it up. All I kept doing was hope for a twist… which never came. Dang.
Dear Korean drama, please have a twist or better yet, let’s not go down that horrible road in the first place.
And yes, this is a dark drama – even without that one element – so those who love melodramas are in for a treat if it stays true to the original.
Here’s the synopsis from AsianWiki:
A detective thinks about quitting his job. He takes on a female university student murder case that was disguised as a suicide. The detective becomes obsessed with solving the case. He has a young sister and she meets a man. The man does not remember when he was little. He is not a good person, but she has sympathy for him. The detective tries to push the man away from his younger sister. The detective suspects that the man is somehow involved in the female university student murder case. The man and the detective’s younger sister fall in love.
Seo In Guk (Shopping King Louis) plays Kim Moo Young who works at a craft microbrewery. He’s the amnesiac in synopsis. Park Sung Woong (Life on Mars) plays the detective, Yoo Jin Gook. Jung So Min (Because This Is My First Life) plays his little sister Yoo Jin Kang. I don’t need to see a single shot to know these three will have amazing chemistry together.
It’s adapted by Song Hye Jin (My Sweet Seoul) and directed by Yoo Je Won (Oh My Ghost). This drama will reunite Seo In Guk with his High School King of Savvy director.
If it’s like the original, it will give Seo In Guk the opportunity to stretch his acting muscles. Unless I’m remembering wrong, I don’t think I was particularly impressed by the female character so I hope she’s well fleshed out in this version.
Here are the teasers:
Very melodramatic as expected. And “Way Down We Go” is such a perfect song choice.
The Smile Has Left Your Eyes is scheduled to premiere on September 26th on tvN. Mark your calendars.
